I found this fun Wicked hoodie at Value Village for $6.99, so I thought it would be fun to try upcycling it with some crochet embellishments. It is a fairly simple concept, but I learned a few tricks through the process.

I started by cutting off the sleeves, leaving the thick seam to give it a solid edge to attach the crochet stitches to. I took a needle with yarn and stitched just inside the seam – this process would work best if you use a ruler to measure the spacing of the stitches.

Using a granny square stitch is the simplest method for this.

I just free-handed the pattern. I found it really useful to place the original sleeve under the rows as I added them to see where I needed to decrease the number of stitches to keep the correct tapering of the sleeve. I made the decreases on the bottom of the arm so they wouldn’t be very noticeable.

When I got to the cuff portion of the sleeve, I switched to using front-post/back post double crochet stitches to form a faux ribbing.
